Tasting Notes
This wine needs time and lots of swirling to lure its wonderful aromas to the surface: it is immensely complex. There are ripe cherries but also dark berries, typical herbaceous notes, floral notes of violets but also balsamic notes. All in all the aromas have a certain freshness, like the cooling evening breezes drifting up from the valley below the Le Due Porte vineyard.
A young Brunello needs notable tannins and good acidity to ensure longevity and this single vineyard 2016 will evolve beautifully over the next decade and beyond. The fruitiness of the berries repeat on the palate accompanied by a mouthwatering juiciness that balances the tannins and makes this wine very enjoyable, even when enjoyed in its youth. This wine is so elegant and distinguished that it is almost an understatement. It will age beautifully and reward us with more and more aromas as it comes into its power. The very long finish - and the hint of dark chocolate – are proof of that.
Pairing it with the right dish will enhance its aromas. You might want to try a filet steak or venison cooked “su vide”, to the seafood lover I would even suggest tuna tataki, but stay away from radishes or other too spicy ingredients.

Harvest Notes
The 2016 vintage is the second five star year since the legendary 2010 (the so-called vintage of the century) follows closely on the heels of wonderful 2015.
For us it was the year of the bug war. We picked Le Due Porte on 5th October 2016. I remember the harvest very clearly since there were storms and we waited to pick until afterwards and, while retrospectively this was definitely the right decision, I remember flinching as the rain fell and fearing the worst.
Though it makes for tedious reading the weather report for the year uses the word average extremely often which is of course exactly the conditions that wine producers most desire. It was an average spring with average rainfall but no snow. 2016 was a vintage that was unproblematic for canopy management or grape health. Some rainfall in July was enough to balance the 30 C temperatures of the second part of the month and a relatively dry August. This said, August 2016 was nothing like 2017 where drought put Montalcino to the test particularly in certain areas. In 2016 there was 70 mm rainfall between the beginning and end of the month. Significant thermal excursion in August allowed for a slow ripening which is often not the case (see 2018). There was rain at the beginning of September and in the middle of the month but the tramontana northern wind saved the day, along with pronunced thermal excursion and very warm days and very cool nights. Expect considerable aromatic complexity, elegant tannins and delightful acidity…. and wines that are anything but average! See here for some of the decisions behind every bottle.

WINESEARCHER - March 2022 (T.H.)
This 2016 from estate vineyards is not technically a riserva, it is just being released now. Aromas of morel cherry, red plum and aniseed; excellent concentration; nicely integrated wood notes and excellent persistence; the finish offers notes of sage and tobacco. Peak in 15-18 years.

VINOUS - DEC 2021 (E.G.)
The bouquet on the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Le Due Porte is simply stunning, wafting up with dusty rose, incense and cloves before giving way to dried strawberries and lavender. This is elegance personified, gliding across the palate with velvety textures while ushering in mineral-laced red berries and violet-tinged inner florals. Though it’s structured and geared for the cellar, there’s a purity here that mixes with the residual acids to create a remarkably fresh impression, as hints of licorice and sour cherry fade. Now in its second vintage, Le Due Porte, a cru bottling from Il Palazzone’s highest-elevation vineyard, shows tremendous potential. Drink 2024-2032. 94+ points

QUENCH - FALL 2021 - (E.O.)
From a 1.24-hectare vineyard, rich in alberese, 540 metres above sea level and very close to the centre of Montalcino, this is a Brunello full of flesh and crunch with oak that enhances but does not distract. Though the fruit character feels so joyously fresh and uplifting, the current beneath the surface is strong. Tightly coiled tannins impress their potential in the mouth with high acidity. This wine has intent to age. An authoritative Brunello
